Need a good stills assistant, grip, or lighting tech in Vancouver?
I’d be happy to help. With 5 years experience in commercial photography & film, I have experience on a variety of production sizes, from two-person stills in studio to 200+ people union film crews on location.
While studying at UBC I worked in the student press and the darkroom, and when I graduated I knew I wanted to work in photography. Taking a pro’s advice to learn lighting, I started working as a 2nd assistant in Toronto. This eventually led to 1st assistant work, and eventually into commercials, film, and even some stage lighting.
I’m comfortable lighting in most situations and with a wide variety of equipment. I’ve spent a lot of time working with Profoto, and Speedotron, but I am familiar with other strobe systems. For continuous light, I have used HMI, Tungsten, and LED continuous sources from Arri, Source Four, deSisti, Mole-Richardson, Lowel, and others. I’m familiar with basic electrical distribution and best practices for using generator or house power safely.
While I do have a sound working knowledge of the electrical aspects of lighting, I have a more extensive knowledge of gripping and rigging. While studying at UBC I had a series of jobs in bike shops; the mechanical skills and knowledge from those jobs made it very easy to step into the world of gripping. I’m familiar with a wide variety of grip hardware, and have experience with car mounting, process trailers, pipe grids, flypipes, chain motors, flyswatters, jibs, and more. I have experience as lead, best, and rigging grip on union and non-union productions, as well as key gripping non-union and short films.
In the still camera department I am very experienced with Nikon, Canon, and Fuji (including Medium Format). I do have practical experience with Phase One and I am currently looking to renew my Phase One Certified Professional credential. For motion I have worked with Canon and Arri, though my experience as an AC for motion is limited.
I have also worked as a stagehand and lighting tech for theatrical productions and concerts under the jurisdiction of IATSE 118 at venues including the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, The Cultch, and BC Place.
